Walleye

With millions of walleyes in Lake Erie, this is our main target fish during the summer. Most of the charters are interested in catching walleyes although there are other fish that are desired. The walleye start schooling in early June and are catchable. Starting then, the fishing progresses. It keeps getting better as the summer goes, right through September. The Last few seasons the average size of the walleyes caught on my boat were 5 to 7 pounds. There were at least 2 to 3 fish weighing between 8 to 10 pounds caught each and every charter last summer. In 2013, 90% of my charters took home their limit. With another 5% falling a few fish short of everybody on board catching a limit.

What to Bring
You should wear light to medium clothing. You should bring a jacket and raingear. It would be wise to wear soft-soled shoes and bring sunglasses and a hat.

Have a cooler prepared with your own food and beverages. Beer in cans are okay to bring. You will also need to bring an empty cooler to keep in your car to take your fish home with you. Make sure you purchase a valid Pennsylvania fishing license. Make sure bring your camera.

Anyone who has never been out from shore over 2 to 3 miles should take some kind of sea-sickness pill. Dramamine is a name brand of one kind. It never hurts to take it even if you have never been seasick. The only side affect, depending on the person, is drowsiness.

Steelhead and Salmon

Lake Erie supports a healthy lake trout and steelhead fishery. They also support a medium sized salmon fishery. Lake trout are large and plentiful during the months of May and June. There are some steelhead and salmon also mixed in those months. During the summer months some steelhead show up in large numbers occasionally. When you can find them, the action is fast and furious. The main run of steelhead and salmon starts at the end of September in front of our large tributaries.

Smallmouth Bass

Lake Erie has one of the world’s best small mouth bass fisheries. I run bass charters starting in May, right after the spawn. Fishing is outstanding. We average around 70 to 100 bass per charter. At this time, until the 2nd week in June, you are only allowed to keep one bass 20" or better. This is Pennsylvania’s trophy bass season. Numerous bass are caught over 4 pounds. Most of the bass average from 2 to 4 pounds. If you are looking to mount a Trophy bass, this is the time to do it.

We troll using Storm lures that run 12’ deep fishing in 14 to 20’ of water. To keep the lines away from the boat, we also use planner boards. Sometimes we will drift fish with minnows and jigs.
